Chaos Heir

Chapter 1286: Superiority

Chapter 1286: Superiority

“The way I see it,” Madam Solodrey’s voice came out of the control desk’s speakers, filling the dim office, “That mutt did you a favor. You have always been too good for him anyway.”

Monica mostly ignored her mother’s words while sitting behind her control desk, studying the images on the large holographic screen above it.

“You are every wealthy woman’s envy, dear,” Madam Solodrey continued. “Almost none of us could claim political relevance without marrying someone with a good name. You are an exception in that regard.”

“Yes, Mother,” Monica absent-mindedly replied, sipping from her full drink. Her mind was starting to give in to the booze like it often did during her long all-nighters, but she had reasons to remain awake that had nothing to do with work that day.

The recording of Khan’s negotiations with the Kros had reached every corner of the network, including Monica’s office in Neuria. She had even watched it multiple times, too, but the holographic screen on her control desk still radiated its images.

The images didn’t move, either. Monica had stopped the video, zooming in on the dark blue figure sitting at Khan’s side, unable to refrain from studying her every detail.

“And don’t let his words swindle you,” Madam Solodrey continued, warning. “What Scarlet Eyes? It must be a trick from that treacherous-”

“Enough, Mother,” Monica interrupted. “Don’t insult my former fiancé any further. You might resent him, but I don’t. You have no idea how hard it has been on him and still is.”

Monica knew Khan almost better than anyone. She was sure he had blamed himself for the breakup and had tried to punish himself over it.

Monica also belonged to Khan’s inner circle, so she was privy to information the network would never learn. She had known about Khan’s actions at Liiza’s arranged marriage as soon as they happened, and that update had threatened to crush her heart.

That pain wasn’t only due to Khan’s new relationship. The network was unaware of most details, but Monica wasn’t. Khan had actually acted selfishly for once, and Monica knew exactly what that meant. He had been too desperate to rely on his usual selflessness.

That knowledge created a strange conflict inside Monica. She couldn’t help but hurt about the love of her life moving on but also felt glad that the breakup had been so meaningful to Khan. His actions vouched for his pain, which vouched for how important Monica had been in his life.

“Dear, you are too nice to him,” Madam Solodrey scolded while summoning a more affectionate tone. “You don’t have to justify him every time.”

“Thank you, Mother,” Monica said. “I must go now. I have a meeting soon.”

“This late into the night?” Madam Solodrey questioned. “Don’t tell me you started following those lousy girls’ advice.”

“I don’t do one-night stands,” Monica sighed. “I believe I wouldn’t enjoy them, either.”

“I raised you well, dear,” Madam Solodrey praised. “Keep working like this, and you’ll become one of the most powerful women in the Global Army in a decade or two.”

“I will, Mother,” Monica casually said. “Goodnight.”

Monica heaved another sigh as she closed the call. The relationship with her mother had improved in the past years, especially since she wielded far more power than her, but she still had to keep her calls short to preserve her mental sanity.

As for the aforementioned meeting, it didn’t exist. Monica had simply lied to cut the call short. Actually, she was multiple weeks ahead of her work. Her schedule was empty, but she didn’t move from behind her control desk.

Monica emptied her drink, retrieving a bottle from her desk drawer to refill it. Once she was set, she resumed studying the image on the holographic screen. Liiza was truly beautiful, but Monica focused on deeper details.

Liiza’s eyes glowed, just like Khan’s did. The recording didn’t show all of it, but Monica spotted the similarities between Liiza’s white tattoo and Khan’s blue one. Monica also saw how fearlessly Liiza dealt with Khan’s bad habits, vouching for her strength as a warrior.

Even as an alien, Liiza was closer to Khan than Monica had ever been. The two had so much in common, and Liiza had also succeeded where Monica had failed, cementing her superiority.

Garret had added proper explanations at the end of the recording, but Monica had understood that truth as soon as Liiza touched her waist. She was pregnant. She was carrying Khan’s child, and that single detail highlighted her suitability as his wife.

Monica knew that fixating on those apparent superior traits wouldn’t do her any good. Still, she couldn’t help but continue her inspection, and not all of it served the purpose of bashing herself.

Truth be told, Monica had never stopped loving Khan. She never would, so part of her felt happy seeing him finally fulfill such an important aspect of his life, even if it didn’t come from her.

Besides, Monica’s mother was right. Despite the heartbreak, Monica was a core member of Khan’s inner circle, making her political relevance undisputed. She could aim for the position of Matriarch without needing fiancés or husbands since Khan’s terrifying shadow still protected her.

Of course, Monica wasn’t sure whether she would trade all that away to be with Khan again, but that ship had sailed. She had rejected that option when she had the chance, while Liiza didn’t.

A message distracted Monica from her absorbed state. Anita had tried to call her again, only to follow with a text when she didn’t answer. Apparently, Anita, George, and little Michael would soon teleport to Neuria to visit her, so she had to prepare.

A more tired sigh escaped Monica’s mouth as she closed the holographic screen. She knew that wouldn’t be her last time inspecting the video, and its contents were bound to become the network’s main talk for the imminent future.

Monica would inevitably end up in countless rumors again, too, but she had grown numb to it at that point.

Nevertheless, another warning reached Monica’s desk before she could put aside her drink. Somehow, someone had truly decided to push for a meeting that late at night, and reading his name on the menus made Monica’s eyebrows arc in surprise.

‘Colonel Rodney Semmut?’ Monica read the warning on the control desk’s menus. ‘How did he get through the Empire’s security?’
