Chapter 122: The Research Fanatic Who Lost His Child (6)

Early the next morning, the Lin family began to pack their things.

It was mainly to pack up Wang Xuan's things. Although some things didn’t have to be taken along, other things were still irreplaceable for him.

The Lin family didn’t show any disdain for these low-priced items, but seriously began to bury their heads in helping their child pack. They moved their luggage to the car outside, one after another.

The occupants of the shabby building were up early and when they saw the scene, they all came up to ask questions.

It looked like they were moving, but why did they have to pack up Wang Xuan’s things?

At this time, Zhou Chuchu smiled contentedly, just as people have always had an impression of her. She warmly explained that Wang Xuan was her and Lin Shiheng’s biological child, and they came here to find him.

After a moment of surprise, everyone in the small building felt that this was indeed the case.

“I had thought, you two were particularly good to Ah Xuan. Last time, I mentioned that Ah Xuan was having a hard time, going out to work without breakfast at a young age, then the next day, I saw the boy having breakfast at your place.”

“Yes, Mr. Lin also helped Ah Xuan push the cart every day. At that time, I thought you guys cared for the boy, but I never thought that there was such a relationship.”

“That’s a good thing! You should take him home and take good care of him. He’s a capable and understanding child, and he will definitely be filial to you in the future.”

Not everyone in the small building was as difficult to get along with as Chao Hong. Every day, he would sing in a tone-deaf voice and quarrel with someone mute. Life was hard. Seeing Wang Xuan, who had had an even harder time escaping his misery, inevitably brought a twinge of excitement to their hearts.

Wang Xuan, in a rare moment of shyness, stood beside his mother. He was embarrassed listening to the compliments he received from the neighbors and gave a shy smile every now and then.

When the things were ready and before Wang Xuan was about to get into the car, the old lady who lived on the fifth floor and had been helped by Lin Shiheng, smilingly slipped an apple into Wang Xuan’s hand.

“Good boy, have a good life with your mother and father, and do well in school. The blessings you will enjoy are yet to come.”

Wang Xuan nodded gratefully at her and got into the car, waving through the window at the neighbors who were seeing them off outside.

After that, it was a whole new life.

After a long journey, the family finally got home.

The Lin family had never lacked money, but the house had been lived in for a long time and had never been changed. The size of the house wasn’t too big but also not too small, it was just right. In Zhou Chuchu’s opinion the house was a little small. After all, Wang Xuan had grown up to be a teenager and the room he had left behind looked a little too small.

She mentally counted her family’s savings and planned to talk to her husband about getting a bigger house.

Wang Xuan, however, didn’t think the room was small at all.

He even felt that the house was magnificent.

Bright and clean floors, nice big lights, modern appliances everywhere in the house, a wide living room and some beautiful ornaments.

His living conditions had never given him the opportunity to see such a home. After all, he had never been to anyone’s home either.

The better-than-expected scene caused Wang Xuan to hesitate a little, as he stood by the door. He subconsciously looked down at the pair of shoes he had been wearing on his feet.

It was a pair of sneakers that would be a little cold to wear in today’s weather. Because they had been wearing them for so long, even though he had scrubbed them as hard as he could, they were inevitably yellow and old. Having previously gotten mud under the soles of these shoes from walking around on the patch of mud in front of the small building before moving, after a long car journey, the mud dried up and remained sparsely smeared around the sneakers, making them look dirty again.

He hesitantly refrained from walking in and was about to move his feet to take off the shoes, when his arm was grabbed by his father.

“Come on, we’re home.”

Lin Shiheng said something which seemed like a perfectly normal remark. While saying that, he pulled Wang Xuan inside.

“This is the kitchen, your mom used to love cooking nice and tasty dishes. You were small and clingy, so you moved your little stool and sat here to watch her.”

“This is the bathroom. Look, isn’t this bathroom a bit smaller than expected? It just for your baths. Your mom and I like showers. You’re the only one who likes to soak in the bathtub. After discussing it, your mom and I decided to place a bathtub in the bathroom, making it a bit less roomy.”

Zhou Chuchu listened and naturally picked up the conversation, “Don’t listen to your Dad’s nonsense. At that time, he was too busy at work to even sleep. You were only 2 years old at that time, and you liked to walk around. When you saw your Dad asleep, you would wake him. The bathroom is the only place you couldn’t open. Later, when we installed this bathtub, he would take naps while soaking in it every day.”

Wang Xuan’s face broke into a smile when he saw how nonchalantly she demolished Lin Shiheng’s story. He then gestured, [it turns out I was very naughty as a baby.]

“Children are always like that. They can’t stay still at home, and would always make a fuss about going out to play. When it was too dark to go down and play, you made a fuss about getting an adult to accompany you. It wasn’t long before you understood and stopped making such a fuss.”

Zhou Chuchu’s expression was one of reminiscence. All those sweet times had been turned into pain after the loss of the child, and the more she thought about it, the harder it became. Except for those first few days, she tried to control herself from thinking about it.

She was surprised that after all this time, when they talked about what happened back then, it still seemed like it was yesterday.

With the child was found, and those pains were no longer painful. Zhou Chuchu looked relaxed and nostalgic. Thinking of Xuan Xuan’s need to familiarize himself with the house, she took him everywhere and made introductions.

“The big living room is usually used for watching TV. When you were little, you liked to play on this sofa. You played with some marbles, literacy cards, and other things on it.”

“The small living room is for meals. Look, this is the high chair you used. You were only 4 years old when we bought it, you were just learning to use chopsticks and had small hands and feet. I saw that you were struggling to sit down, so we bought this high chair. Those days, you would always sit here for every meal.”

Zhou Chuchu touched the chair that was still in good condition after a decade, and there was some sadness in her eyes, “You knew how to behave since you were young, and you were a good eater. You never needed coaxing, and you opened your mouth to eat when it was brought to you. You were also good at eating with a spoon, taking each bite, one by one. When people heard that you could use chopsticks at 4 years old, they praised you, saying that they had never seen such a smart child before.”

Wang Xuan followed his mother’s story and set his eyes on the high chair.

It was as if he could see that there was a tiny child sitting dutifully up there, taking a bite of his meal with chopsticks, and across from him, was a gentle woman looking at him lovingly.

“This is the balcony, I used to keep a lot of flowers. When the flowers bloomed, the house smelled good. Before the flowers bloomed, I told you that when the flowers bloomed, the whole house would smell good, so you went to look at the flowers every day and when you found a pot with a flowering bud, you would run to me with great joy and shout at me, ‘Mommy, Mommy, the flowers are blooming. Is the house going to smell good?”

Zhou Chuchu’s voice was soft. She had a smile on her face, but there were tears in her eyes.

“I’ve been leaving your room untouched, with all the toys you had when you were little still there. The bed in the room is for adults, and the quilt on it has been taken out regularly for sunning, so it should be quite comfortable to sleep on.”

Wang Xuan obediently listened, [Can I see the room?]

“Okay, let’s see the room, let’s go see the room.”

Zhou Chuchu was at her happiest when her own child asked for something from her. When she saw Wang Xuan wanted to see the room, she quickly wiped the corners of her eyes and, with a smile, happily took the person to Wang Xuan’s childhood room.

It was called his room, but in truth, the child was so young when he was lost that he couldn’t have slept alone. He always slept with the adults, and this room was left as a toy room, with some children’s toys and a bed.

Watching Zhou Chuchu enter the house with Wang Xuan, the old lady who had been standing by the door with a happy expression, wiped her tears and spoke with a choked-up voice, lamenting, “Finally, we got him back. If we kept dragging it out, I was afraid that Chu Chu wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer.”

Lin Shiheng also looked at his wife and son. Hearing the old lady’s words, he slightly curled his lips, “Grandma, don’t worry. In the future, I will take good care of them.”

Wang Xuan didn’t know what they were talking about outside. He went into the room and saw all kinds of toys he had played with as a child.

He had no memory of them. However, when he held them in his hands, it was as if he could feel the happiness he had experienced as a child. Merely thinking about it made it seem as if he could feel the same carefree happiness he had back then.

This night, he slept in his own room.

He thought he wouldn’t be able to sleep, but lying in this strange bed, looking at the strange white ceiling, Wang Xuan was able to sleep very quickly and peacefully.

It was as if, he had never left the house.

“Come, follow me and make this sound, ah —“

A doctor in a white coat opened his mouth to signal.

Wang Xuan obediently opened his mouth, “Ah -“

“Good.”

The doctor listened to his voice and turned to the couple who were looking at him nervously, “After examination, there is nothing wrong with his vocal cords, not even a little attrition. He’s a very healthy child. I also listened to the sound he made just now. It’s very clear and not hoarse, very different than a normal sound a mute person would make.”

Lin Shiheng quickly asked, “Then, doctor, do you mean that my son can be cured?”

“That I can’t say, because technically he’s not sick at all, so we can’t start treating him right now. Can you tell me exactly when the child started to lose his ability to speak, and what medication he was prescribed? We need to get to the root of why he can’t speak before we can take the next step.”

Zhou Chuchu, who was standing by his side, immediately looked at Wang Xuan. However, Lin Shiheng, who was standing by her side, suddenly paused, as if he thought of something. He took his wife aside and said, “Chu Chu, I have a colleague, his cousin is a very famous psychiatrist. There must be a psychological problem with our Xuan Xuan. I’ll give you her phone number, please go out and give her a call first, and consult if this situation is considered a psychological problem. Maybe it can be treated with therapy.”

Zhou Chuchu glanced hesitantly at her husband, then at Wang Xuan, who was sitting obediently. She nodded and went out to make a call.

After she left, Wang Xuan began to put pen to paper, and write that he had been mute for as long as he could remember.

Actually, he didn’t know when he became mute, because from the beginning of his memory, he had always been mute.
