Chapter 46: Going Home
"You might not care, but you don't get to decide for others! What I do is none of your business!" Sun Jack glared at the Song 6PUS in front of him.
As soon as he finished speaking, the Father pushed the car door open, holding his wound as he stepped out and stood beside Sun Jack. "Enough. If they're leaving, I'm done too."
In the pouring rain, Song 6PUS burst out laughing maniacally. "Ha! Hahaha! Fine! Mtherfer! Then we're done! Break it up! Think you can threaten me?! F* you all, you bunch of a**holes!"
As he spoke, Song 6PUS walked to a nearby car, slammed his cybernetic arm into the window, plugged in a data cable, and started the vehicle.
"Idiots! A whole bunch of idiots!" He flipped everyone off, floored the gas pedal, and sped off into the rain. Moments later, Sun Jack's neural system pinged him with a notification: Team channel disbanded.
Seeing the alert, Sun Jack immediately blocked Song 6PUS.
As the sound of a baby crying grew fainter, the surroundings quieted down.
"What's his rush? Death isn't hurrying him, so why's he in such a hurry for this? Speaking of which, that guy probably took our reward for this mission, didn't he?" Tapai suddenly broke the silence.
"That's not gonna fly. Fair is fair—team's done or not, that money is ours. We earned it," Sun Jack said, shaking rainwater from his hair. "Get in the car. We'll talk when we get home. If he dared pocket our money, I'll skin him alive!"The car engine rumbled as it began the slow drive toward their home.
Throughout this, Four Ai stayed silent, chewing her gum without a word.
Sun Jack gazed out the window at the falling rain. "Father, what do you plan to do with the baby?"
"I'll take him back to the church. The sisters will raise him," the Father replied.
"You’ll raise him?" Sun Jack turned around, startled.
"Yes," the Father answered quietly, his expression turning solemn again.
At that moment, King Kong sent a message: "The Father’s church is basically half an orphanage. He’s taken in loads of kids. The Father got into mercenary work just to keep the church running. Truly a saintly heart—Amitabha."
Initially, Sun Jack had a poor impression of the Father because of the Satan Gang incident and had even been wary of him. But now he realized that there were still "normal" people in the Metropolis, and surprisingly, the Father was one of them.
"Thanks for everything today, Father," Sun Jack said.
"No need to thank me. As a shepherd, my duty is to make the right choices. God's lambs are all equal in my eyes," the Father replied calmly. His gaze wandered to the hazy Neon City outside the car window. "The people in this city have been corrupted by consumerism, turned into slaves of money by capitalism. They think what they wear defines who they are. But God teaches us that this isn’t necessarily true."
"What makes us human is our independent thinking and personality—not the garbage ideas others pour into our heads."
As the Father finished, Tapai sent a message: "Man, look at this guy. You can tell he's cultured. Talking like a pig wearing a bra—it's got layers!"
Sun Jack shot Tapai a glare before looking at the Father. "So, what’s your next move?"
The Father looked at the baby in his arms and shook his head slowly. "I haven’t decided yet."
Sun Jack chuckled faintly. "Me neither. I’ll just take it one step at a time."
The team might have disbanded, but Sun Jack felt like mercenary work was all he had left. He didn’t know where else to start. He needed the money, but he had no experience as a solo operator. Where would he even find jobs?
Before he realized it, they had arrived at Idol Street. The Father stepped out into the rain, cradling the baby as he disappeared into the downpour.
"Things haven’t gone so far that they can’t be fixed. Just give Song 6PUS a little more profit and soften up, and he’ll come around," Four Ai said from the driver’s seat.
"Like hell! I wouldn’t take him back even if he paid me! That guy only knows how to exploit others. You think I don’t know? He was just using us for practice!" Sun Jack retorted scornfully.
"You’re being too harsh. PUS might not have experience as a fixer, but he knows his way around this line of work. Plus, he’s great at talking—he’ll say the right thing to the right person. That’s an essential skill for a good fixer."
Sun Jack let out a deep sigh. "I’ll think about it myself. And hey, could you keep your hands to yourself? Focus on driving, will you?"
Four Ai reluctantly pulled her hand off his thigh. "Alright, alright. But let’s stay in touch, okay?"
"By the way, is AA at your clinic?" Sun Jack asked.
"Of course not. She wasn’t my patient. I sent a drone to drop her off at your place."
"My place?"
Exhausted from the day's chaos, Sun Jack returned to his apartment with Tapai. All he wanted was to get some proper sleep.
Just as he leaned in to scan his iris, the door unlocked from the inside.
"Jack! Tapai! You’re back!" AA greeted them with a smile, clutching her bandaged abdomen.
"What are you doing opening doors? Get back on the couch and rest!" Sun Jack quickly helped her back to the sofa.
Seeing the blood seeping through her bandages, Sun Jack frowned. "I didn’t expect you to get hurt so badly."
AA waved her hand dismissively. "Not at all. It’s not like I lost an organ. This injury is nothing! Besides, Four Ai’s medical skills are incredible. I don’t even feel pain anymore."
Then, looking a little embarrassed, she asked, "Jack, when will my payment come through?"
Sun Jack’s expression grew complicated as he tried to figure out how to explain the situation.
AA misinterpreted his look and waved her hands. "Oh no, I’m not trying to rush you. It’s just that I owe Four Ai for the medical fees and want to pay her back quickly."
"F***ing Four Ai, that cheapskate! Charging for something so minor!" Sun Jack cursed as his temper flared. He immediately called her via video.
Four Ai picked up quickly. Reclining naked in a bathtub, she lazily sipped her drink.
She set the glass down and raised an eyebrow. "Yo, tight a**! Miss me already?"
"Miss your a**! Wasn’t it just a simple stitch-up? Why charge for something so small?!"
Before Four Ai could respond, AA quickly interjected. "Jack, no, no! Four Ai didn’t ask for anything. I insisted on paying. I’m already so grateful to have this job—I don’t want to owe you all anything."
Hearing this, a tipsy smirk spread across Four Ai’s face. "Oh, my."
"‘Oh, my’ your a**!" Sun Jack snapped, reaching to end the call.
"Wait, kid. Do you have feelings for AA?"
"I do not!!"
"Don’t deny it so quickly. Let me give you some advice: in the Metropolis, if you want to sleep with someone, beyond looks and gender, you better ask about their preferences first. There are over a thousand kinks to keep track of here!"
"Kinks?" Sun Jack froze. What nonsense was Four Ai spouting now?
"Actually, I have a unique talent—I can instantly tell someone’s kink just by looking at them. You might want to ask. You could discover something… interesting." With that, Four Ai ended the call.
