During the time Linthia spent as a captain, Rex has never seen her be this serious.
Out of the three captains, she was the most timid—the little sister who can’t quite reach the appropriate level. She tried, even the people knew that she tried but she was simply unfit to reach the appropriate level.
It was not because she didn’t have the talent.
Rex makes sure to equalize their playing ground from the very start so it’s not that.
Instead, Linthia was held back because of her lackluster flames of ego.
She only wanted to be good enough as a captain, the constant insecurity—from seeing how Dindora and Gelmar rose in power snuffed out what little ego she had. Even if there was still an ember inside, it was incomparable to the others.
It was precisely why she couldn’t evoke an evolution in her bloodline despite Rex’s help.
Gelmar wanted to be strong enough to protect his son and make him happy.
Dindora wanted to make Dargena City her home as she no longer had a home.
Both have a powerful drive to become stronger.A reason that Linthia lacked.
But now, that changed—Dindora’s death changed Linthia.
Becoming the greatest general in the Clarentium Empire, that’s her new drive.
Like she said, Dindora’s will and courage seemed to be passed down to her.
Rex was pleased by her change.
On the battlefield of pain, we often find treasures we could not have otherwise unearthed.
I know at least that much.
Had Dindora not died, Linthia might not have changed until it was already too late.
Fate has intervened and it favors Linthia.
"Do not be brazen, you’re grieving..." Evelyn intervened in the conversation—she could tell, that Linthia was pushing herself, wanting to make an immediate change. But she knew that not a lot of people could function during this kind of time. ṜãNŐᛒĘs̈
In her entire life, she only knew one person who could keep going no matter what.
And that person was Rex.
Regardless of the situation, Rex would always function and do what needed to be done.
No matter what angle Evelyn viewed Linthia, she wasn’t someone like Rex.
Approaching close, Evelyn placed her hand on Linthia’s drenched shoulder gently.
"Take some time for yourself to process this and once you recover, we can talk" She added.
Upon hearing this, Linthia wanted to rebuke.
She wanted to decline as her mind was never clearer than now.
But no words came out of her mouth, she stammered, unable to say anything back to Evelyn.
Seeing this, Rex nodded in agreement, "One day, I’ll give you one day. Rest and think about what you’re asking me. Making a decision when you are emotional will always end badly. In case this will help, the method I have for you could kill you so be warned"
Linthia bit her lower lip unwillingly but she eventually complied, "I understand..."
Once she grasped reason, she excused herself and left the cemetery.
Adhara accompanied Linthia back, she knew what a loss could do to a person.
Her father was the prime example so she decided to accompany Linthia back to her abode.
Still standing in the rain, Evelyn gazed at them leaving with a steady gaze.
"What do you have in store for her?" She asked without turning to Rex.
Rex crossed his arms, "I’m going to take her to the Spirit Realm if she’s still willing"
"Spirit Realm...?" Evelyn turned with her eyebrows raised.
Seeing the sharp gaze she was giving him, Rex lifted both hands and posed a gesture—as if he was saying ’what’ without saying it, "You watched me train to go there—you shouldn’t be that surprised"
"You wanted to leave again after you refused my help during the Demon Moon without telling me the reason why?" Evelyn squinted—and took a step toward him menacingly. "And to top it off, I got news from the Dark Elves that you battled three Order Beasts last night—without as much as a courtesy of informing me about it"
For the first time in a while, Rex stuttered—scrambling to find words to form a reply.
Like a prowling tigress, she leaned forward and squinted her eyes.
It was as if Evelyn was taunting him to give his best excuse.
"K- Kyran was wit-"
"Zip it—I could already tell your excuse is dumb. I tried to be understanding, and patient here but you’re testing my limit. I didn’t even bring it up earlier—hoping that you would at the very least apologize to me and the others but you didn’t"
Upon hearing this, Rex put on a wry smile.
He wasn’t underestimating the situation but this is kind of his reflex in this kind of moment.
So that’s why she held me behind... Not because she wanted a hug but because of this.
Rex felt awkward, he should’ve seen the cues but he didn’t.
His mind was always occupied to the point that he missed every small detail.
Evelyn massaged her forehead, she couldn’t believe Rex was still acting like this.
Especially with what Qonvale said.
Of course, Evelyn wanted to slap Rex and did way worse—but she could not, there were still many eyes around as they were in a public place. She restrained herself from doing anything and gazed at Rex again.
"I’m sorry," Rex apologized. "I should’ve at least told you"
"It’s alright, as long as you’re safe, it’s alright..." Evelyn sighed roughly. Experience more content on empire
Both of them then decided to head back to the castle after bidding goodbye to Dindora.
Rex and Evelyn walked side by side, taking their time despite the pouring rain.
"I’ll not be leaving soon, there are still things that I need to do before I go to the Spirit Realm," Rex opened, deciding to fill Evelyn in—on his plans. "Devo is in trouble, he was being severed from me. I assumed he got captured, in the Spirit Realm. I need to go there if I do not want to lose my spirit core"
"What...?" Evelyn gasped in shock.
Frankly speaking, she didn’t know much about the Spirit Realm other than the obvious.
She didn’t know that the Spirit Realm has a functioning society.
Devo being captured means there were rules there.
Of course, there was the Spirit Emperor, but she had always assumed it was simply the title of the mightiest spirit, not an actual ruler who governed all spirits. Despite how far they had journeyed in this world, it was clear there were still mysteries left to unravel.
"Are you a match against the Spirit Emperor?" Evelyn asked in concern.
Knowing that this Spirit Emperor might be very old, she assumed that he was very strong.
Rex sighed and shook his head, "I don’t know, I need to learn more about the Spirit Realm"
In a moment, the two arrived back at the castle.
Evelyn wanted to say something, there were still the Angels underground that were awaiting Rex’s decision—but she could tell that he had something in mind. He had only come back so she decided to give him some space before informing him.
"Once you settle what’s on your mind, go to me," She finally said.
Rex nodded as he went to sit on his throne.
Having been away for several days, the cushion felt softer than he remembered.
Moreover, a faintly sweet fragrance lingered in the air or rather, coming from the cushion.
A fragrance that stirred the memory of a certain someone—Calidora.
It smells like her... Now that I think about it, she is been unusually quiet. I hope she is doing well with her pregnancy. No, what am I saying? I should check on her before going to meet with Evelyn again.
Averting his attention from the Vampire Princess, Rex decided to open the inventory.
He gained several rewards from last night and he wanted to check them.
First of all, he obtained Claws of the Blood Hunter.
...
<Claws of the Blood Hunter>
Item Rank: Legendary (Tenth-rank)
Description: Claws of the Blood Hunter is a consumable item, an insignia that would give the user two effects upon absorption. One, the user’s strength would be increased by 30% if the user managed to draw, the blood of an Order Beast. Second—the user’s strike would disrupt the funneling of Order Beast’s mana.
Penalty: Only one elemental mana could be set in a day.
...
"A good addition to battle Order Beasts," Rex nodded, pleased with the item.
Other than giving him a boost against Order Beasts, it also gave him a negation ability.
If he could disrupt an Order Beast’s mana flow, he would be able to stop—its attacks, which essentially gave him a negation ability. Of course, he reckoned there would be limitations as it probably wouldn’t allow him to negate Dravitar’s attack for instance.
But nevertheless, he welcomed this with open arms.
Considering he gained this item from killing his first-ever proper Order Beast, the effect was not surprising. He wasted no time, and summoned the Claws of the Blood Hunter item, from the inventory.
As mentioned—it took the shape of a bright red insignia, shaped like an animal’s maw.
Rex placed it on the back of his hand and its energy instantly seeped into him.
He saw a phantom of his claws glow red before dissipating once again.
<Congratulations, the user has obtained the Order Hunter passive skill!>
"Moving on from that is the fun part..." Rex muttered and clicked on another item.
It was the one he was most curious as the name of the item was intriguing.
...
<Force of King Mark Ticket>
Item Rank: Twelfth-rank (Demi-God)
Description: A consumable ticket that could be used to upgrade one of the user’s King Mark into the next ascension, capable only of ascending to the second ascension.
...
Unlike the Claws of the Blood Hunter with a longer description, this one is shorter, and more concise. But even then the impact it brought was greater. Rex leaned back on his throne, his palms open as he was in shock.
It was his first time obtaining a Twelfth-rank item, a Demi-God item.
And as the rank suggested, it doesn’t disappoint.
"A ticket for me to go straight to the second ascension...?" Rex mused—the smile on his face broke loose, as he couldn’t hold it anymore. He reached level 100 already and got this, and it doesn’t disappoint. "Kaiser would be punching and kicking air if I use this on his moon"
Having to destroy Kaiser in the first trial, he wanted to do it again.
But he decided to cut the God some slack and use this ticket to skip past that instead.
Just as he thought of using the ticket, however, his eyes were drawn to something.
Displayed beside the inventory tab was his stats window—and he frowned when he saw that the Banished Dark Moon King Mark was at the second ascension. He hadn’t checked this tab recently so he had only seen it now.
"I reached the second ascension? When?" Rex muttered with a frown.
Either he was become senile or this second ascension was done without him knowing.
Or he might’ve missed it and thought it had always been the case.
Recalling this, Rex closed his eyes.
His consciousness drifted away, pulled by an unknown force—and in the next second he was standing in a dark expanse that felt choking and insanely uncomfortable, it was the Banished Realm.
Sweeping his eyes around, Rex found Nivellen was still lying in the shallow water.
She was still at the exact same place Rex saw her last.
But unlike before, purple chaos energy was mildly sizzling out of her body.
Upon seeing this sight, Rex ran towards her—and knelt down on one knee.
He could feel the heat from the chaos energy burning his skin as he got close but even then, he held Nivellen’s neck, and lifted her up to check on her, "Hey—I came here to tell you that I will be getting the cure for you. Hold on for me. Jus a little bit more"
Hearing his voice, Nivellen tilted her head to look at Rex.
Finding he was back, her lips curled into a weak smile, "I... I don’t think I’m going to make it"
