GREED: ALL FOR WHAT?

Chapter 2139 - 2139: Special Identity.

The descendants of the family have to set themselves apart one way or another in order to be appreciated by the family. Shawn made himself stand out by becoming a lamp bearer.

His decision to become a lamp bearer restricted his actions and made him unable to enjoy some of the things he used to be able to enjoy such as raping women and beating servants or death or taking anything he fancied from a commoner including their wives and children.

As a lamp bearer, he had to live as a law-abiding person, or the brand on his chest would punish him severely. In exchange, the family rewarded him for his sacrifice with a big house and a lot of money. With money, he doesn’t have to rape someone to have sex with them. He can coerce them with money, so he hasn’t lost out too much.

The family rewarded him even though he can’t betray the lamp bearers. It is because even though he can’t explicitly betray the lamp bearers, he can betray them passively by helping the family acquire information about the lamp bearers.

He doesn’t tell the family anything. That would be an explicit betrayal. But he also doesn’t try too hard to hide the traces of his actions and movements. That way it will be easy for anyone monitoring him to know what he is up to.

The family hasn’t found a way to bypass the oath, but they don’t need to. All they need is a silent partner in the form of a lamp bearer willing to be foolish enough for them to keep track of.

Thanks to this arrangement, the family knows where the base of the lamp bearers is and where the entry point of every underground tunnel is. They also know many of the places that lamp bearers serve at in the city and what they do there because Shawn has been there and done those things.

According to the brand on Shawn’s chest, he hasn’t openly betrayed the lamp bearers because he hasn’t done anything wrong himself. The brand doesn’t know what his family has been able to achieve through him, so he’s in the clear.

And even sometimes when Shawn goes out of his way to reveal critical information, the brand still doesn’t notice anything wrong because Shawn is never explicit with it.

For example, when Shawn got home today. He sat at the dinner table to eat and talk about his day with his wife.

He said to her after swallowing a mouthful, “I met a new acquaintance today. He is having trouble with energy supply. I offered to give him some help. He might come to me or not for that help. But I think he will come because he looks to be in a hurry to gain strength.”

He took another bite out of the beef on his plate. He drank some wine and ate some more.

When he swallowed again, he could finally speak. He said, “Working is so hard. It is stressful and can make people sick. Even my boss is not safe from this. She can get sick and not come into work. It is a pity because that usually leaves the workplace unsupervised.”

He was having a harmless conversation with his wife about his day. Surely, it is not a crime to chat about his day to his wife. If he can’t chat with his wife about harmless things, who can he chat with?

There is nothing wrong with talking about his day to his wife as long as he doesn’t reveal important information. But through the harmless things that he said, he had revealed critical information about the division.

He had revealed that their division got a new lamp bearer. That new lamp bearer is the acquaintance he met today.

With this information, the family will begin to look out for new faces that go in and out of the base. When they find the new person, they will follow them and acquire more information about them. This way, the family is always up to date on the information about the lamp bearers.

Shawn also subtly revealed that Captain Sheckel didn’t come to work today. He didn’t mention her name or how he discovered this. It is the family’s job to find that information out.

As for the matter of her sickness, the cause of her sickness can be found with a little more investigation on the part of the family. It is because Captain Sheckel is an epic being. As an epic being, her body has begun to change, and she has officially acquired an epic body, so she can’t have normal sicknesses.

There are two ways for her to get sick. It is either that another godclad made her sick or she has the more common problem of backlash from her divine flesh.

Shawn himself isn’t sure what kind of sickness she has, so he can’t say. He only knows that when he used the tunnel today, Captain Sheckel wasn’t the one to open the door for him. When he went to her office and didn’t find her there, he was able to confirm that she didn’t come in today.

No one in the division tells him important information because they are wary of him, but through careful observation, he has been able to notice some things, such as the dark rings around Captain Sheckel’s eyes that signify either a lack of sleep or too much sleep, both of which are abnormal for a godclad and extremely abnormal for an epic godclad.

So he doesn’t know exactly what sickness she has. Even if he does know, he will refrain from saying anything clearly for fear of breaking his oath. If he breaks his oath, he will have to rectify it by confessing his sins to his superior and atone for it by being punished.

He can’t afford to do that now that Captain Sheckel is sick. If he has to go to her to tell her that he snitched on her, she will get a heads-up and be more careful, which will interfere with whatever the family has planned for her.
