The possibility of Sheckel advancing to rank 5 was big news to the Ivory family. It was so important that the patriarch was informed.
The Ivory family didn’t want Captain Sheckel to advance to rank 5 at all. It is unlikely that she will continue to serve in this town and more likely that she will be transferred to a city. But they are not willing to risk it.
If she doesn’t get transferred when she advances to rank 5, it goes without saying that the lamp bearers will be able to pressure the Ivory family even more than normal. Their plans won’t work with such a powerhouse in charge of the lamp bearers in the town.
Even if she is transferred, a new rank 4 captain will be sent to replace her. That means most of the information they have accumulated about Captain Sheckel will go to waste. They don’t want to see that happen either.
So the Ivory family began to feel pressured. They began debating if they should give up or advance some of their plans now.
While this was going on, Legion was under house arrest again. Two lamp bearers took shifts watching them. One was the traveler they knew about, while the other was a monk.
Godclads of the monk pathway are like warriors, but they are also priests. They have divine abilities that enhance their strength and durability. So one might think it is safe to use a monk to restrict a killer in case the killer loses control.
A monk can only subdue an inexperienced killer. Legion is far from inexperienced. Legion also has more than one pathway, so the monk watching them might as well be useless.
But they didn’t kick up any fuss this time around. They only pretended to sleep but were secretly practicing their divine abilities in their bedroom.
This made sure that they weren’t wasting their time, but their training wasn’t as effective as the ones they do without people being around them.
The only saving grace was that there was energy water in small gallons hidden in many places in the house, especially in their bedroom. They drank the energy water and used it to train Sever while being watched.
The ability he practiced was Sever, and the path of killing’s rank 2 divine ability called Death Mark. Death Mark is a spiritual mark left on a target after Sever is used on them.
This mark is left in the injury by Sever, so an injury is the prerequisite for Death Mark to activate. When the number of Death Marks reaches a certain number, the Death Marks can be made to explode, which will deal critical and even lethal damage to the target.
So Death Mark is a way to deal with troublesome foes who can’t be killed with a single touch. As long as the killer can accumulate injury on the target, the Death Marks can be triggered to deal a deadly blow to the target.
The number of Death Marks needed to trigger the explosion is dependent on the mastery of the divine ability. At 1% mastery, six Death Marks are needed.
That means at 1% mastery he will need to touch and injure a target with the Sever divine ability six times before he can trigger the explosion. At 100% mastery, this requirement will be reduced to just two Death Marks.
Another great part of Death Marks is that there is technically no limit to the number of Death Marks that a killer can use and no limit to the damage that will result from the explosion of Death Marks. The greater the number of Death Marks used to trigger the explosion, the greater the resulting damage will be.
Legion-1 said, “This Death Mark is just right for unskillful killers who don’t know how to use Sever correctly.”
The other clones had to agree with him about this. An inexperienced killer might not know that the red light of Sever can be shifted to turn the hand into a weapon. So they rely on just the depth of Sever’s cutting ability to kill.
Unfortunately, the few centimeters of depth of Sever in the early stage are seldom enough to do lethal damage on their own. A killer would need to target specifically vulnerable locations on the body to deal lethal damage with one strike if they only rely on the cutting depth of Sever.
But thanks to Death Mark, even if a killer relies only on the range of effect of Sever, as long as they injure their enemy a couple of times, they will still be able to kill the enemy given enough time.
Technically, a rank 2 killer can use Sever and Death Mark to kill a god. The only limit is spiritual energy and how long they keep themselves alive in the presence of a god long enough to stack a lethal number of Death Marks.
Death Mark was so powerful that the things they practiced it on were critically damaged after the death marks were triggered.
With six Death Marks, a log of wood broke into chunks. With twelve death marks, a log of wood broke apart into sawdust. With eighteen death marks, a log of wood broke apart into ashes.
It isn’t that the log of wood is weak and easy to demolish. Even metal didn’t fare better.
The explosion of six death marks was enough to make a rod of metal crack all over. The metal rod didn’t break apart until twelve death marks were triggered together.
After eighteen death marks were triggered, the metal rod became red and soft. It looked ready to be forged.
Legion-8 said in awe, “No one would believe that this was caused by 18 harmless scratches.”
Legion-4 said in agreement, “This is why killers will always be the best. Warriors can be skillful, knights can be tenacious, and monks can be flashy, but no one can match the Path of Killing in their ability to kill.”
